EB256 Movement Fundraiser: Building a New Kitchen for Rev. Nayenga Primary School
The communities we partner with have high rates of girls that drop out of school because of pregnancy or as a result of marrying at an early age. Through our programs, we give them a chance to dream and continue working hard.
Our second movement fundraiser is a virtual 5K in honor of the women and young girls who walk miles to collect water for their domestic chores. In addition to taking on other caregiving roles, they have to work and go to school. In most cases, the girls end up dropping out of school altogether. The least that we can do is find ways to make their school life easier. This starts with our porridge program which provides free breakfast.
At the beginning of the porridge program, when we were asking the school how we could be of help, we noticed that the kitchen used to provide breakfast and other meals to students (those that could afford to pay) was barely a kitchen. We wondered if their biggest problem wasn't a lack of food, but a lack of kitchen and storage space. Even if one of the students wanted to bring in food from their harvest, there would be no room to keep it.
Our plan is to first invest in food storage and preservation, which will help our porridge program run smoothly. We hope that as we grow, we will be able to provide lunch as well. We only need $600 more to help the school finish the kitchen, which will include effective storage facilities. With a proper kitchen, the school will be able to sustainably feed the students.
